Fall Leaf Bag Program

Each year, beginning October 1, residents can pick up leaf bags as a free city service. Limit one bundle of five (5) bags per household.

Program Guidelines

City-provided bags -- as well as other small to large plastic garbage bags -- may be used to collect fall leaves.

  • Bags must not exceed 40 pounds and only contain leaves. Bags that are heavier than 40 pounds or contain non-leaf materials will not be collected.
  • Place your bags curbside. Bags should not be placed in the street, gutter, ditches, or any drainage way, as this can obstruct the flow of stormwater runoff when it rains.
  • Any leaves raked into the street will not be picked. Residents can be fined for placing debris in the roadways or gutters.

All leaf bags will be picked up curbside through the end of November and taken to the landfill for use in their composting program.

Where to Pick Up -- New Location Starting 2025

Residents can can be pick up bags at the Public Works office at City Hall (220 E Morris Ave) on the 4th Floor. You must show a valid ID with a South Salt Lake address to qualify.

Composting Leaves

Composting is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your leaves. You can also make mulch out of leaves, which creates an organic, rich soil for your gardens.

Help Clean Storm Drains

Residents are encouraged to clear leaves and other debris from the tops of storm drains near their property throughout the year. This helps prevent localized flooding near your home and help keep our waterways clean for wildlife. Sign-up for our Adopt-a-Drain program to be a stormwater superhero!
