Mayor's Statement

The City of South Salt Lake received the results from an independent audit of the Police Department and appreciates the candid participation of employees at every level. While the findings are not positive, they are also not unexpected given the significant organizational changes underway.

Two years ago, I, as Mayor, appointed Chief Danielle Croyle to lead a shift toward a modern, community-focused policing model—one grounded in prevention, mutual respect, and accountability. This transition, along with efforts to address longstanding cultural and operational challenges that pre-date Chief Croyle, represents substantial change for the Department. It is clear from the audit, that while we have made progress, the City has much work to do towards achieving these goals and the audit reflects the strain that often accompanies necessary reform.

At the same time, the report highlights important strengths, including great commitment to our residents, strong peer relationships, improved training and professional development, and positive administrative changes.

The City’s priority now is to use the audit constructively. Over the next 60 days, we will develop an action plan that supports employee wellbeing and strengthens long-term organizational effectiveness, guided by the audit’s findings and best practices.  This is a process that will require commitment, compromise, and patience. These issues didn’t occur overnight and they won’t be solved overnight.

Public safety is one of our most critical responsibilities. We extend our appreciation to all Department employees for their service and their willingness to participate in this review. I am confident that we share a common commitment to the health and safety of our South Salt Lake community.
