Emergency Alerts
When and how will you be contacted in times of emergency disaster? The most important thing to remember is, Be Ready SSL!
There are three primary ways you will receive emergency alerts, depending on the severity of the issue.
- Opt-in Push Alerts: Smart911 requires you setup an account with your contact information, through which VECC will send emergency alerts.
- Automatic Push Alerts: The County will push out IPAWS alerts to cell phones during certain emergency situations.
- Posted Alerts: During emergency situations, the City will post information on the City website and social media channels.
Smart911
South Salt Lake participates in the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC), an interlocal government organization that manages emergency communications such as fire, police, and medical dispatch, as well as 911 and Smart911 services.
Smart911 (also known as Reverse 911) is an opt-in emergency notification service locally operated by VECC that sends emergency alerts to users via text, call, or email, and provides first responders with critical information to better serve you in emergency situations. This information includes access and functional needs, emergency contacts, and any other household information that you choose to share.
We strongly encourage all residents to register with Smart911 for emergency alerts.
IPAWS
The Integrated Public Alerts & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA's national system for local alerting through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). IPAWS alerts all WEA-enabled devices in a selected geographic area. This is not an opt-in service, and Salt Lake County manages emergency alert dissemination through IPAWS in our county.
To receive IPAWS alerts to your cellular phone/device, make sure you have the emergency alert notification feature turned on.
City Channels
The City will work diligently to post emergency updates, precautionary advice, advisories, and warnings to our website and social media accounts, but this is not an official emergency communication channel. Emergency information trickles down, and posting to the website or social media may take place well after emergency alerts have been issued through official channels, such as Smart911, IPAWS, and possible news media outlets.
